About this Property

The best of both worlds- a stunning 14th century château, once the property of Madame de Pompadour, now lovingly restored and ready to move into.

Situated near Arnac-Pompadour, headquarters of the French National Stud, this beautifully-presented stone château is offered for sale in excellent order. Consisting of 30 exquisitely-decorated rooms on three levels including 11 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms, the property nestles within private grounds of 2.8 hectares.

Probably of medieval origin, at one time a wolf-hunting lodge, the château is believed to have been given by Louis XV to his favourite mistress, Madame de Pompadour, in 1745. Its documented history traces back from around 1600 to the Sanzillon family, whose emblem can still be seen in several places around the château today.

An impressively-proportioned great hall with imposing stone fireplace and pisé floor provides a centrepiece for the ground floor. Upstairs, the elegantly decorated master bedroom is adorned with rare enamel glass panels from the internationally-renowned 19th century artist, Amédée de Caranza. Many historic features can be found throughout the château including ancient brickwork containing text and a carved wooden mantlepiece. The present owners embarked on an extensive restoration project some 25 years ago, utilising master craftsmen and the finest local materials to bring the property into pristine condition.

Across the courtyard from the main château building is a spacious two-storey galleried annexe which would be a perfect function facility for weddings or conferences.

In addition to the château, there is also a 3 bedroomed cottage in excellent order, as well as a stand-alone traditional bread oven.

Securely fenced, a salt water heated swimming pool with large changing room/summer kitchen sits discreetly between the château and cottage. Within the grounds are many mature trees and shrubs, a large decorative pond and a fresh water spring. Garden equipment is securely housed in a triple garage/toolstore.

With just a 10-minute drive to all commerce, the racetrack and of course the magnificent 11th century château at Pompadour, this property is ideally located.

Arnac-Pompadour

Limousin

Stunningly green and beautiful, the Limousin is cattle country and made up of three departments, the Correze, the Creuse and Haute Vienne. This area, to the west of the Massif Central, offers some of the best year round grazing making it a magnet for equestrians.  Rolling hills, woodlands and a low population density combine for a most rural lifestyle. Yet with both Limoges and Poitiers airports close at hand this is a superbly accessible area.

Testimonials

    Testimonial by Paul FINCH

“I bought my dream property La Balie through Beaux Village in April 2022, I had been looking at properties throughout France and fell in love with the Lot et Garonne where Beaux Village has offices.  Vanessa, their representative who contacted me after I had inquired about another property helped locate properties that were not going to waste my time. More than that she really helped me understand what I was getting into and worked tirelessly to answer questions not easy to look into for someone living in Hampshire, United Kingdom. For example she visited the local Marie and farmers who I was going to be neighbours with to check there were no telephone masts, wind or pig farms about to be erected on my doorstep, so I really felt I was making an informed decision when I went through the buying process. Being English herself but speaking French, I think she had a real understanding for my concerns and was always on hand to check something or help with a recommendation. She was great in providing the missing information my UK solicitor asked for and when it came to the final part of completion, she was with me in the notaires office. Because of her professional input I’m happily living in France, not for one moment regretting my decision.” Paul FINCH
